This is the first complete and fully illustrated catalogue of British silver belonging to a public art museum in the United Kingdom to appear since the Second World War. Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall, which house the decorative art collections belonging to the Leeds City Art Galleries, have long been famous for their paintings, furniture, ceramics, wallpapers and textiles. The British Silver consists of over 200 superb objects dating between Elizabethan and modern time. At the same time there is an array of different types of domestic objects which illustrate not only the development of historical styles but also the different uses to which silver has been put over the centuries. The aim of this catalogue is to present a detailed record of everything that is known about the individual objects. It should therefore be invaluable for connoisseurs and students of the decorative arts, social historians and everyone interested in fine craftsmanship.
