Nearly 1000 Colour Photographs
Transfer-printed pottery - also thought of collectively as Blue & White pottery, as it was first and most commonly produced in this colour - has always been a popular and accessible collecting area. It is the pattern and border that are often the only means of identifying the manufacturer and the date, and the rarity of a pattern can affect an object's value, but without knowing the name of a particular pattern the collector can face a Herculean task in finding out this information. This book offers for the first time a user-friendly way for collectors to identify a pattern easily. It opens with a brief introduction on transfer-printed pottery followed by an illustrated catalogue of patterns which is organized alphabetically by subject. Each pattern is illustrated, with border variations, and captioned with information on pattern or border name, maker, date, colours it is known to have been made in, plus any additional information such as if it was made specifically for export. A variety of objects is presented to show different pattern treatments and marks are also included. With over 1,000 patterns identified and illustrated in colour, Miller's Encyclopedia of British Transfer-printed Pottery Patterns is an invaluable visual sourcebook that collectors cannot afford to be without.
